Core Values

by Karen Clark on February 13, 2007

Balance has always been a challenge for me and I really have struggled with time management in general, especially since my business has been growing so quickly and I’ve recently had some personal challenges thrown into the mix. This morning I had a coaching call with DSWA certified coach, Sharon Pira, as part of my ELITE Leadership Training course, and I had an ‘aha’ moment from something she said at just the right time in my life.

I am sure I’ve heard and read this before, but it really, really made a difference hearing it today, and maybe it will help others. She said that usually times of stress are times when our core values are not being honored. When I think back to times when I’ve felt that hands-shaking heart-sucking eyeball-popping stress (can you tell I’ve been there recently???) :) , I can almost ALWAYS trace it back to one of my core values being compromised. Knowing this, the answer is easy

The answer is to always keep our core values at the forefront of every thing we do – every task we complete, every appointment we schedule, even every word we speak. If we let our core values lead our life, we will not feel stress, because our values will be honored throughout our days!! One of the tips she gave me that I wanted to share with you was to write down your top 5 most important values and stick them everywhere on post-its, and reflect on them before making decisions throughout our days. I am doing that starting today, and I cannot tell you what a sense of relief AND control over my life I feel already. Try it! Do a search on “values checklist” if you need help identifying your top 5! Good luck!
